There are many benefits to forward bends, both standing and sitting.
They create length and space in the spine, counteracting compression, and their inward nature can promote introspection. Forward bends are good for digestion and detoxification because the position helps to stimulate the organs to digest food and remove waste and toxins from the organs and tissues of the body. Forward bends also help to stretch and open the hips, back and hamstrings.
In this easy-to -view bullet-point list you can see just how marvellous they are:
- Stretch the hips, hamstrings, and calves
- Strengthen the thighs and knees
- Keep your spine strong and flexible
- Reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue
- Calm the mind and soothe the nerves
- Relieve tension in the spine, neck, and back
- Activate the abdominal muscles
- Ease symptoms of menopause, asthma, headaches, and insomnia
- Stimulate the kidneys, liver, spleen
- Improve digestion
- May lower high blood pressure
Yet forward bends can also be a challenge to many people, especially those with tight hamstrings. Common physical patterns, such as overstretched back muscles and rounded shoulders (most likely from sitting in front of a computer for hours) are often exacerbated in forward bending poses.
This workshop will help us begin to dissolve those patterns as we learn the necessary alignment allowing us to discover greater ease in our forward bends, so we can uncover fresh ways of looking and experiencing ourselves. This multifaceted awareness about how we move can help us cultivate a deeper, richer yoga practice, allowing us to discover new ease in our forward bends.
Please consider bringing (not obligatory but may be helpful) :
2 blocks for standing forward bends,
a blanket or sitting cushion – or your blocks will do here too for seated forward bends,(blanket with a dense flat weave is the best, as it folds to transform into a nice and firm seat)
a strap or a firm belt (about 3-4 feet long)
There are 25 asana to try on for a size!
We will cover seated and standing poses alike, and some that you might not have even considered to be a forward bend!
A detailed illustrated list of all positions is available after the workshop too – all the relevant cues to remind you of what to pay attention to.
